APPEARANCE AND BODY PERCEPTION
Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
He's 5'11 and fairly broad. He has some muscle tone he's developed from wandering/times he's had to fight since the Circles disbanded, but nothing more than you'd expect from someone living the way he has been. He's probably a little skinnier than he should be, but now he's with the Inquisition he'll soon make that up.

How old is he?
24

Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well, or does he slouch?
Most of the time he'll carry himself very definitely upright. It's only if he's unsure or upset he might slouch slightly.

How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He's very, very slightly short sighted, but other than that he's in pretty good health. He's only really in shape as of recent years, but now he's got that fitness he's unlikely to lose it again. Especially since he has a mabari he needs to keep exercised.

How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
With confidence most of the time. He can be tense if he's in a bad mood, but that doesn't make him falter. He's only really clumsy if he's stressed or panicked about something.

How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
He's attractive enough and has no problems with the way he looks. He's not anything special, but he's okay with that.

Describe his complexion: dark, light, clear, scarred?
White and prone to ruddiness when he's upset or has been exerting himself. He's got a few scars, but nothing you'd notice without looking for them. He tries to keep himself out of the situations where he might acquire them.

Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Dark brown with a reddish tint under certain lightings. It's straight and he keeps it short and neat.

What color are his eyes?
Brown.

Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Not really. He normally has a small soul patch, but that's about it.

What are his chief tension centers?
His shoulders, eyes and jaw.

What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Robes, robes, more robes. All of the Circle variety.

Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
They fit well and he's very comfortable in them. He'd feel uncomfortable if he had to wear anything else.

Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
There are no differences whatsoever.

You knew it was coming: what kind of underwear does he wear, if any?
Normal Dragon Age style smalls.

SPEECH
What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
About mid-range. It gets a little deeper when he's angry.

How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He talks with confidence. Most of the time he finds it very easy to speak his mind even if he's shoving his foot deeper and deeper into the back of his throat.

Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He sounds very Fereldan since that's where he's spent most of his life, but his pronunciations may occasionally slip into Free March since that was where he started out.

What language(s) does he speak and with how much fluency?
Trade fluently, and that's pretty much it. He can probably read a little Ander and Antivan, but not with any fluency or certainty.

Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nope.

Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He doesn't think about his words, but there are times when maybe he should.

Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He's generally very eloquent, or at least can sound like it. He sounds very confident when he's talking about things he thinks he knows because he believes very strongly he does. Even when asking questions about things he doesn't know he'll sound pretty sure of himself. He loses eloquence if he's panicking, but rarely otherwise.

EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL
How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Very, very book smart, not at all street smart. He's very good at theoretical work and memorising the things he reads, but he does have a problem realising that not everything he reads or hears might not be true. He doesn't tend to questioning.

His street smarts don't really exist. He started out life a noble, then since he started showing signs of magic he's lived inside his circle right up until it was disbanded. As a result he's very sheltered and has no desire to change that. He hates the big, bad world and is happiest when he can be inside surrounded by friends and familiar surroundings.

Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He's not good at thinking on his feet. He doesn't do well at all when he doesn't have time to think about his actions.

Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He's definitely more logical, and a little more practical than he is idealistic. There's not much in that though and sometimes he can think his more idealistic views are true even when this isn't quite the case.

What kind of education has the character had?
He used to have private tutors until he was eight, since then he's had all his education in the Circle. He can read and write. He's good at magical theory and knows his own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to practice. He's got a strong grasp of religion, and knows about as much about the world around him as you can pick up from books.

What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
He's good at healing and creation spells, though his lightning magic certainly isn't something to overlook. That area is just less honed. He loves magical theory and will read all that he can on the subject so long as it's not based on a forbidden area.

He's also good at research in general and does enjoy doing this even when it isn't something that especially interests him.

Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert.

Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered, or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholic? Laid-back or driven?
That all depends on how comfortable he is. If he's in a situation that's familiar he's pretty chill and cheerful. In ones he's not so used to he's quite tense and prone to nervousness. Switch nervousness for grumpiness if he feels like his ideals are being questioned or threatened.

How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Again, that depends on how comfortable his environment is. He's quite happy with new people in general, but he doesn't like new situations and he can be quite nervous and/or grumpy with people too if he isn't entirely happy about his situation.

Is he more likely to act or to react?
React.

Which is his default: fight or flight?
Flight.

Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He favours dry humour. He likes jokes so long as they're not at the expense of things he views as important such as his religion. He's also not big on pranks because he sees them as juvenile, but if everyone else is happy he may find them funny on occasion.

Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If so, how does he deal with them?
Nope.

What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
His biggest defining moment was definitely when his magic first showed itself. If he wasn't a mage or hadn't been sent to the Circle he would be an entirely different person. Kinloch Hold being taken over by abominations and blood mages was another big one. It played a pretty big role in cementing his views that the Circles are needed to keep mages under control and non-mages safe from them. The fall of Kinloch Hold years after that has taken away everything he knows from him and that's something he's still reeling from.

What does he fear?
Blood magic. Demons. Falling to temptation from either one of those things.

At the moment he very much fears for the future of mages. What if the Circles are never reinstated? Not only would he lose his home forever, but he sees that as being extremely dangerous for everyone.

What are his hopes or aspirations?
He wants to be a First Enchanter one day.

What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
He's just as freaked out by the little spiders as the big ones.

RELATIONSHIPS
Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Non-existent. He hasn't seen them since he was taken by the templars when he was eight. It was very good before that though and he still considers himself to love them even after all this time.

Does the character have any siblings? What is their relationship like?
He has a twin sister called Elise. She's also a mage and was sent to the Circle in Markham. He's the older of the two, but the second to manifest magic, though their parents didn't find out until he admitted he wasn't the only one who had it.

He hasn't heard from her since they were children, which is probably just as well since she sided with the rebel mages. He would not take that news well.

Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Nooooope. He doesn't even remember any other relatives that well.

Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
The mages of Kinloch Hold were his family. He might not have got along with everyone, but he grew up there as did most others there. It's hard not to form attachments to the people you've spent your life with.

Who is the character's best friend? How did they meet?
His best friend was a mage called Hendry who was a couple of years older, but arrived at Kinloch Hold only a few months before he did. He died at the hands of a templar shortly after the circles fell.

Does he have other close friends?
Some? Most he has no idea where they are though, and some he struggles to get on with since political opinions are a lot more polarising when there's a rebellion on.

Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
It's not something he used to struggle with, but it's a lot different outside the Circle. As with many things, it's not something he finds so easy anymore.

Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Friends, though the answer would likely be family if he were to get to know any of them again. That answer comes more through a lack of family to consider important than anything else.

Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single.

Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No, and he's always broken off relationships where he's started to view the other person as being something more than casual. He doesn't think relationships are a good idea in the Circle, and outside it... well, he hasn't come across that issue yet, but he's still a mage.

Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
Cute elf girl he pined after for a few years in early puberty. Her name was Isla and he did actually end up having a casual thing with her in his late teens, but by that point he considered her more a good friend rather than anyone he had romantic attraction to. He doesn't have a crush at the moment.

What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He doesn't. He avoids them like the plague.

Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If so, how does he relate to them? If not, does he want any?
Nope. He's always been very careful to make sure any girls he's slept with aren't at risk of getting pregnant. Someone should probably tell him pulling out isn't as reliable as he thinks it is, but he's got away with it so far. He has no desire for children in the future either. Circle life doesn't allow for families, and even if it did... he doesn't think magic is something he should intentionally be risking passing down.

Does he have any rivals or enemies?
He thinks rivalries are petty, but actually he has them with pretty much anyone he knows who's pro-mage freedom or dislikes the Chantry. He has strong opinions and that does cause friction whether he likes to admit to rivalry or not.

What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey Scale?
Bisexual. He prefers men, but they're by no means an exclusive attraction. So probably a 4 on the Kinsey Scale.

How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
He enjoys it, but it's more when the opportunity arises than something he considers important for him.

What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Thanks to living in the Circle and not being a rule breaker in most cases he tends to forgo foreplay and try and get things over with as quickly and quietly as possible. He's not bad at what he does, but he definitely needs to learn to slow down and actually take the time to enjoy things properly sometimes.

That also ties into his turn-offs. Taking time, risks, or making too much noise make him anxious and have been known to put him off entirely.

Being a mage he does have a few tricks up his sleeves most don't, at least. Why carry lubricant when you can cast a grease spell of the perfect texture? You like playing with electricity? No? What about temperature play? He can do that too.

BELIEFS
Do you know your character's astrological sign? How well does he fit the type?
Converting DA months to ours he'd be a Libra. It fits fairly well, I guess. Not perfectly, but reasonably enough.

Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
He's very, very religious. He's a devout Andrastian and has been all his life. He supports Chantry decisions and they definitely have a strong influence over his opinions on things.

Does this character have a personal code of ethics or morals? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He has a strong sense of morals and ethics. He's just grown up believing the things he does, though his belief that mages are better off in Circles was definitely strengthened by abominations and blood magic nearly destroying his home. Which. I will only say roughly a billion times, I'm sorry. It would take a lot of talking to change his views on that being the best thing for them as well as seeing another way things can work first hand. Honestly, though, it's unlikely to do more than soften them maybe a little.

How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Noooot well. He can range from indifferent to completely intolerant depending on what exactly the subject is.

What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational, or does he have a good reason for them?
He doesn't think of himself as prejudiced, but the fact is he's ignorant about a lot of things and doesn't tend to listen when he thinks he's right about something.

DAILY LIFE
What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Poor. He's never had to have money before so it's a weird feeling for him.

What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
Mage, mage, always mage. What this means has changed a lot in recent times though and he's not dealing with it especially well. He's a lot more uncertain and really wants to stop living back in the wild and go back to his nice tower home please. :c

Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
Haaaaa. Ha ha ha. He's with the Inquisition now so I guess he's at least got something? It's. A step above being completely homeless.

Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend her money on?
Alcohol? Which he doesn't even drink that much of. He just doesn't have a lot to spend and the concept of owning things beyond clothes is still weird to him.

What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He's a healer and magical researcher for the Inquisition. He's pretty good at both things and likes them. He'd still rather go back to being an Enchanter at Kinloch Hold though.

What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
He likes reading, hanging with friends, and drinking juuuuust enough to relax. He does these things in his spare time, but also prays and exercises his mabari.

What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He likes to eat at set times, with people if possible. It's what's familiar to him and he likes that. He's not fussy about what he eats, but he definitely prefers simple Fereldan style foods. He does drink alcohol, but not excessively.

Basics

NAME: Daylen Mathan
AGE: 24
NATIONALITY: Free Marcher (sounds Fereldan)
RACE: Hooman
OCCUPATION: Mage Healer
HEIGHT: 5'11"
BUILD: Broad (slightly toned)
HAIR: Dark Brown
EYES: Brown
BEARING: Uptight
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Dumbass soul patch
Status

He's mostly up to research projects and helping out with healing, so usually he can be found either in the library or out where the sick and injured are set up in the day. He may also be found in the tiny Chantry they've got set up.

In the evening he can be found out and about exercising his grumpy old man mabari. He frequents the Herald's rest most nights too, though he's not a heavy drinker so he's unlikely to be anything more than tipsy. He's there for the social element.

Reputation

He's a very, very vocally Loyalist mage. He also has a hard time disregarding anything the Chantry has to say so he's still kind of shaky on whether he should even be working with the Inquisition or not. He's left once after the Chantry denounced them then came back because limited options and he does not do well out in the wild. He's not particularly loyal to the cause and if he sees another option he'll probably go for it. Given where they are if you want controversy he's your man.

He's a pretty good go to if you want research or healing doing though, so there's that stuff too.

Hooks

MAGE POLITICS. I love having him argue with pro-freedom mages, but it'd also be cool to have him interact with people who maybe share his views or are a little more neutral.

Also trying to help this dude find his place outside the Circle since he's still very uncomfortable and unsure of himself in that regard at the moment. I'm looking forward to doing that in a setting where he isn't pushed into a position of power and hasn't had to join the wardens, giving him a permanent place by default.

It'd also be nice to get him a little more wordly since he's not very well cultured, and most things he's learned about the Dalish, city elves, dwarves, etc... has come from books. Which. Aren't always the amazing source of information he thinks they are. It'd be nice if he could start to realise that and become comfortable with it.

CHARACTER

Name: Daylen Mathan
Canon/OC: OC
Journal: [personal profile] deflocked
Race: Human
Nationality: Free Marcher
Occupation: Ex-Circle Mage/Healer
Age: 24

History

Daylen started out life quite happily. He was well cared for by both his parents and their servants, and though he didn't get to play with many friends his own age he had a twin sister who more than made up for it in his eyes. She showed her first signs of magical activity not long before he did, and though she wanted him to keep it secret he couldn't bring himself to when he started showing signs as well. They were eight at the time and before he knew it he was being taken by the templars of the Fereldan Circle, far away from his home in Kirkwall. The journey was long and left him feeling depressed and helpless despite the kindness of the templars transporting him. He was too young to properly understand what was happening and wanted nothing more than to return to his parents and sister. This feeling changed quickly once he actually arrived.

There were many children there, and people far more equipped to take care of his needs than the templars who'd been sent to retrieve him. Despite the enclosed environment he was always happy and never desired to leave. He had access to books of all kinds, and there were mages to help teach him to use his powers as well as templars to protect them from the dangers both outside the Circle and within. He learned to be wary of the templars, but knew they were necessary. Mages were vulnerable to possession and corruption. No one was better suited than the templars for dealing with those mages who fell to that temptation.

When he reached 19 it was decided Daylen was ready to undergo his Harrowing and become a full fledged mage. He was nervous. He'd always been told how talented he was, but he'd heard terrible rumours about Harrowings gone wrong and no apprentice was allowed to know the details so he had no way of knowing how prepared he was. He was relieved when he awoke to find out that he'd passed. Rather well at that.

He wasted no time joining the fraternity of the Loyalists and hoped one day to be Kinloch Hold's first enchanter. He knew of course things weren't perfect. Not all the templars had their best interests in mind, and some mages resented the circles regardless of how much they were needed. He'd been there too when Uldred's actions almost caused the Right of Annulment to be invoked. All the same, he loved his Circle and is heartbroken over the Mage-Templar war that took away his home.

Personality

In his element Daylen is a confident man. He's bright, he's capable, and he finds it easy to fit in. He's an adept mage and he knows it. He's happy to help other mages improve where they can as well as listening to them in the areas he's weaker in. Although he knows the system that controls mages isn't perfect he knows to how operate within it and he's happy there. More to the point, he feels it's necessary.

As a mage he has the potential to become possessed, or to give into temptation and abuse his powers. He could prove to be extremely dangerous, as could any of them. He agrees fully with the isolation of mages from the rest of society, not just to protect others from them if things do go bad but so they can have the best opportunity to learn how to make the most of their skills and protect themselves from the dangers they may present to themselves.

He's always taken a keen interest in mage politics and is aligned with the Loyalists. He believes that the templars who guard them are important, and though he knows there are those of them who abuse their power he overall respects them. He supports the Rite of Tranquillity, too, seeing it as unpleasant but necessary. He feels it is a better alternative to death, or letting a dangerous mage keep their abilities. Needless to say, he's rather unhappy with the mess the mage rebellion has caused.

Daylen takes strong stances and once he's formed an opinion it's difficult to persuade him to change it. He respects tradition and thinks it exists for a reason. However, he is not completely immoveable. If he sees another method working in practice he may be swayed, but it will take time and far more persuasion than it took for him to settle on his initial beliefs.

Outside his limited areas of expertise he's a lot more uncertain and tends to rely on others to tell him what is the best solution. It stresses him out when people turn to him, and if he can't get advice or pass the final say onto someone else he has a tendency to panic and dwell on whatever choice he did make. If it's one he feels was made wrongly he'll hold onto that, berating himself for not doing what he should have done long after the fact. He needs and wants guidance in unfamiliar situations, whether that's from the rules or those with more wisdom or experience that him.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Daylen's ahealer who also uses a lot of creation spells, though he will resort to primal lightning magic if he's forced onto the offence. Outside magic his strengths largely lie in academics. He's good at memorising facts and theories, solving puzzles, and research.

He's less good with combat, leadership roles, or being charged with tasks completely on his own. He'd also rather stay at home, but he'll go out into the field if it's needed.

Inventory

Not much of significance other than a grumpy old man mabari and his staff.

Motivation

He's a mage and they have templars. Even if the Inquisition is recruiting rebel mages too. He's not sure if they're heretics or if their former herald really was sent by Andraste yet, but with the circles disbanded his options are limited and they seem like the best option he has.

Technically he was already with the Inquisition after the explosion at the conclave, but left when the Chantry renounced them. So. Not exactly the most reliable recruit there. Whoops.
